Fell Ponies
I have a great passion for the fell - they are very beautiful, give a good rider a great ride and for somebody a little nervous or a young child they seem to change to as docile as can be, which for me is great having three young children and various relatives and friends that like to go riding the fells will always look after them.

My 5 year old quite happily hacked out Legend for me on the lead rein .(he has now been sold to a lovely girl who rides and drives)

A bit of history

The early fell pony type of animal made an ideal working animal, it was strong and sure-footed, placid in nature and not too big to make loading and unloading difficult while being up to the weight of a full load. Unlike the small native ponies of pre-Roman times, the improved Fell type was large enough for a man to ride and was recognised as a dual-purpose breed

Fell ponies were used to transport slate, copper, and lead as well as iron .-ore’

the Fell pony came by way of iron-ore mines situated in the north-west of England. Once excavated the ore had to be transported across country to the smelting works of the north-east coast, due to the railways ponies became redundant and many sent to slaughter.

Luckily the fell pony breed type remains unchanged and still being bred in there Lakeland home the cumbrian hills

Ponies today

The fell makes a superb family pony as they are good weight carriers ,but because of there height and temperaments are great for the kids.

A very versatile pony that will do any job you require it to do,they also make superb driving ponies.

Occasionally youngstock and riding ponies for sale
